Patriots vs. Lions: Let’s Talk Turkey Now—Why Detroit Will Pull the Upset

Since I am out of town visiting family for the week, I just want to weigh in (short and sweet potato-like) with a few comments and a prediction for today’s Lions game.

First, the few comments:

Why should the ever loyal fans of the Detroit Lions continue to watch the drama surrounding this Lions team as it unfolds?   

Well, for one, a loyal fanbase refuses to fall off the bandwagon, regardless of just how bumpy the ride gets. I, for one, will be right there with the Lions this week. Yes, I have been wrong a few times this year, but I have also called both of the Lions’ victories. 

More importantly, this game has all of the potential signs of an upset—an upset that this Detroit team undeniably deserves. After all, despite the shape of a football, everyone knows that any ball eventually has to bounce back in the opposite direction at some point. I think that today will be the day that the ball bounces in the direction of the Detroit Lions: 

1. The Lions can score points and they have exhibited a prolific pass offense. At the same time, New England possesses one of the worst pass defenses in the league (30th).

2. The Lions have one of the better pass rushes in the league. The Patriots have shown an inability to protect the passer.

3. I do not expect Tom Brady to play the entire game today, and the Pats will not put up the kind of numbers they will need if they are to outscore the Lions. Not without Brady.

4. As I mentioned earlier, the Lions are due. Anyone who has watched the Lions play this year has seen at least four games where the only thing that has been more distasteful than Lions penalties and miscues has been the officiating that has literally given Lions opponents the call on every possible occasion.

Look for a rebound from a Lions team that looked lackluster against the Bills, played fair against the Cowboys and will be fully rebounded by 12:30 this afternoon.

The Lions score over 30. That will be enough to take the cranberry out of the Patriots’ uniforms and send them back to New England unstuffed.
