NFL: To Touchback or Not to Touchback, That Is the Question

January 16, 2011   ·     ·   Jump to comments

A co-worker and I got into a heated debate about kickoffs and coverages.
I stated that if my kicker had the leg for it, I would want him to kick out of the back of the end zone every kickoff with the exception of onside kicks and squib kicks to burn off time.
He strongly disagrees with the idea of giving the other team the 20-yard line every time. He thinks they should try to pin the other team inside the 20. In thought, it sounds good, yet not probable. I'd rather take the safe route of not giving the other team a chance at great field position or even a touchdown.
I know the average starting field position is the 28-yard line. This further leads me to believe that I'd rather give the other team the 20. I really wanted a lot of feedback from real football fans, so please leave your opinion in the comment section.
