2011 NFL Draft Results See Patriots Draft Next Backup to QB Tom Brady
In the 2005 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected USC backup Matt Cassel in the seventh round at No. 230 overall.
Cassel, who backed up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC, has now surpassed Palmer and Leinart on the field after learning under Patriots QB Tom Brady and getting sent to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett is a better prospect than Cassel was when he was drafted, and he was selected as early as the second round by coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
Will he rise up the depth chart, show promise in limited play, be franchised by the Patriots and then be traded, only to star on another NFL team? Or will his character concerns have him following in the footsteps of another Ryan, all-time bust Ryan Leaf?
This is what people should be asking about Mallett, not if he will see the field in the next four years or so as a starter.
