"With the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select Matthew Stafford, quarterback, Georgia."
As quickly as NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell spoke those words, Stafford was the face of the Lions franchise. Face of a franchise that had completed a record setting 0-16 season just that past year. Face of a franchise that had a brand new head coach and first year general manager. That's a lot of pressure for a kid who was just 21-years- old at the time.
Detroit put a lot of stock in their young quarterback, including $72 million, with $41.7 million guaranteed.
After being named the starter of the season, Stafford showed signs of serious potential, but he also struggled, throwing 20 interceptions that season. He showed toughness enduring 24 sacks in 10 games. He showed resilience, heart, and leadership. He also showed off the rocket strapped to his right shoulder, some people call his arm.
