John Carlson Retires: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

After seven NFL seasons, Arizona Cardinals tight end John Carlson announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the sport of football.  
On the heels of his decision, the 30-year-old former Notre Dame standout released a statement, per Darren Urban of the Cards' official website:
After much thought and consideration, my wife Danielle and I know that this is the best decision for us. I was blessed to play seven seasons in the NFL for three tremendous organizations—the Cardinals, Vikings and Seahawks. I will always treasure the experiences and relationships made during that time, but I'm also very excited about the next phase of my life and what's ahead.
As pointed out by Urban, Carlson's retirement was unexpected because he had been working out with the team:
