C.J. Spiller: No Substance, All Filler

C.J. Spiller is a role-player.
Yet, there are reasons that Spiller is widely considered the No. 1 RB prospect in the 2010 NFL Draft. He has "home run" speed and consistently made big plays throughout his college career.
Thus with the emergence of Chris Johnson on the Tennessee Titans, it's easy to see why any team would want a speedy difference-maker at RB.
Simply put, Spiller is a glorified third-down back. He does not run between the tackles, he has average field vision, and considering his speed, he has poor natural elusiveness. He is a straight-line runner.
Spiller is a change of pace, not a go-to guy.
This is not to say Spiller is a bad football player outright. But with the No. 9 overall pick, the Bills' current depth at the RB position, and considering the glaring team-wide needs, the Bills made the wrong choice.
If placed in a limited role as a returner and third-down back, Spiller could succeed. But those players can only do so much.
