The balance of power is shifting in the NFL.
Over the last decade, we've all heard about how it's a quarterback-driven league and offense rules the day. That's been predominantly true. But you may have noticed that more defenses are playing at a dominant level this season, while offenses are lagging behind. There's no better example of that than the Sunday night game between the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks, which ended in a 6-6 tie as two great defenses shut down two formerly great offenses.
Through seven weeks, the metrics are bearing this out. Football Outsiders has five teams below minus-20 percent in defensive DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average). Click here for a full explanation of that stat—defensive DVOA is a positive when it's negative.
