Smith Has Failed to Be Impact Signing 49ers Hoped for Smith has struggled to make a consistent impact since the 49ers signed him to a five-year, $40 million contract in 2015. While some of his lackluster production is due to poor quarterback play, the Niners were expecting more than the occasional flash of his big-play ability.
Durability remains one of his strong traits. Before last week, the 27-year-old Maryland product hadn't missed a regular-season game since the Baltimore Ravens selected him in the second round of the 2011 draft. He did fight through a back injury earlier in the current campaign, though.
