How Shawne Merriman of the Chargers Has Become Persona Non Grata

Three years ago, Shawne Merriman was to the Chargers defense what LaDainian Tomlinson was to its offense: He was a leader that brought an aura of excitement every time he took the field.
Back then, Merriman was a young Pro Bowler whose devastating hits and trademark lights out dance electrified Qualcomm Stadium. His excellent play at linebacker led the Chargers to the best record in football.
Merriman jerseys sold like hotcakes as the fans accepted him as the man to finally replace Junior Seau. And he was poised to do so, until a cruel series of events put him where he is today.
The Chargers currently have four unsigned free agents. Of the four — including Marcus McNeill, Vincent Jackson, and Malcom Floyd — Merriman's contract is the least important.
Just goes to show how quickly the game of football changes. Three years ago, Chargers fans hardly knew the other three while Merriman was larger than life.
