Elite safeties are hard to come by in the NFL, but they truly make or break a talented defense. A great safety covers the field from sideline to sideline, helping in coverage and providing an extra "body" in the box against the run. Classic examples include Bob Sanders and Troy Polamalu, whose teams historically perform better with their top safeties on the field than off.
