The Oakland Raiders announced they have released quarterback Christian Ponder before Saturday's deadline to trim their roster to 53 players after Matt McGloin won the backup job behind Derek Carr.

Philadelphia Eagles Could Be Landing Spot for Ponder Saturday, Sept. 5 Rand Getlin of the NFL Network notes multiple sources told him the Eagles are interested in the fifth-year quarterback.
Ponder spent four years with the Minnesota Vikings, who selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft. He never lived up to that high billing, however, posting a lackluster 75.9 quarterback rating in 38 games with the team.
The 27-year-old Florida State product signed on with the Raiders in March with an eye on earning the team's second-string job. He couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as McGloin outplayed him during training camp and the preseason.
Looking ahead, landing with the Eagles is an intriguing option.
