Defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson and the New York Jets had hoped to reach an agreement on a contract extension prior to the start of the 2015 season, but that goal now seems unlikely to be met.

According to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini, the likelihood of a new deal being inked by the time the Jets open the 2015 regular season against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday is low.
That is significant since Wilkerson previously insisted that he would not negotiate during the season, per Cimini.
The 25-year-old Temple product is coming off another strong campaign that saw him register 56 tackles and six sacks in 13 games. That was on the heels of a 10.5-sack season in 2013.
