NFL Moves Free-Agency Deadline to May 12: Latest Details and Reaction

The NFL is the king of the sports world in America, and it is big news even when it makes a shift in its offseason calendar, as it did Tuesday.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that the league moved the June 1 free-agency deadline date to May 12. Per Florio, “After June 1, unrestricted free agents signed by other teams don’t count toward the compensatory draft-pick formula. Starting this year, that date will move from June 1 to May 12, according to the league office.”
Florio also noted that the Competition Committee had originally discussed moving the date to May 1, but the draft would still be taking place at that time. By having the date nearly two weeks after the draft, it allows for time to further evaluate rosters and provides some leeway time before “allowing free agents to sign without the move helping their former team or potentially hurting their new one,” per Florio.
