During the offseason, it sometimes slips your mind how special a player truly is. Especially in a league dominated by potent offenses, the defensive studs around the league are sometimes forgotten. However, when the San Francisco 49ers signed middle linebacker Patrick Willis to a five-year, $50 Million extension, it helped me remember how fortunate the team is to have a player of his caliber. He’s one of the primary reasons why the team has turned things around and is headed in the right direction. But this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. If you look at the big picture, it’s truly a team’s defense that dictates their ultimate success. As we’ve all heard before, defense wins championships.
