San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis is heading into the final year of his current contract. General manager Trent Baalke confirmed Tuesday that the sides have talked, but he didn't provide many details about the state of negotiations with training camp underway.

Davis, Baalke Discuss Future After TE's Down YearWednesday, Aug. 5Paul Gutierrez of ESPN reports Baalke discussed several topics following 49ers practice Tuesday night. While he talked about Davis' contract situation, his comments didn't make it sound like a new deal was imminent.
"He wants to be here long-term," Baalke said. "We're always going to try to keep our own. Sometimes it works. As you've seen, sometimes it doesn't. But Vernon and I have had conversations, and we'll leave it at that. He understands where we are, and we certainly understand where he is."
